 » Dainu Hill – sculpture garden dedicated to Latvian folklore
One of identification symbols of Turaida Museum Reserve is Dainu Hill – sculpture garden dedicated to Latvian folklore. It was established in 1985 in honor of Krisjanis Barons (1835 – 1923) who collected and systematizes folksongs. Some years later political changes in Soviet Union and Latvia began. Dainu Hill became the symbol of national independence. Several years each Saturday and Sunday thousands of folklore groups arrived in Turaida to sing folksongs and to express their attitude towards these events, to honor past of Latvian people, to draw strength and belief for future. Emotional charge was so big that it surrounds Dainu Hill in nowadays too. Dainu Hill is a consistuent part of Folksong park which is situated in the territory of Turaida Museum Reserve. In this park stone sculptures made by man being in harmony with the unique beauty of nature create special atmosphere which vibrates from abundance of energy. Staying here, person can relax and obtain strength for daily life. Sculptures installed on Dainu Hill are made by Latvian sculptor Indulis Ranka. Altogether there are exhibited 25 sculptures. Those are not illustrations to some definite folksong. Sculptures express poetry of Dainas (folksongs) – its foundation is universally recognized values – love, honor, getting on with surrounding environment, people, cares of relatives, nature.
