Dedicated to the 410th Anniversary of the Rose of Turaida – „My Values and Those of My Neighbours” The Night of Museums - 2011 will continue conversation commenced in the previous years about the values in our life. The legends, myths and historical documents have preserved in our collective memory about witches and sorceresses, about good and evil in our relations. This division you can find in the the world of fairytales, which we discover in the early childhood – witches, dragons, sorcerers, heroes and strong men. This year we celebrate the 410th anniversary of Maija Greif - the Rose of Turaida. The legend, which has a documental testimony, found in the archive among the proceedings of inquisition, reminds us about eternal values – honour, self-respect, strength of personality and wisdom. Wisdom as a wisdom of life and understanding of the order of things, respect towards secrets of life and essential values. The tragic story about the young and beautiful girl makes us to think over the value of the tragedy. History is always the vertical line from the past to the future. Are not there similar tragedies also nowadays? Today we have more freedom, freedom in relations and attitude, but has the respect towards your neighbour also increased, towards physically delicate person, towards everything that has been destroyed by evil? Looking into future we should remember, what has happened before. The Night of Museums is a form of event, during which we try to develop emotional lesson of history enabling visitors to understand better and deeper the space and time before 410 years when Swedish-Polish war was in progress and originated the story about the girl Maija. The theme of this event, which unites all museums is „Neighbours”. In the spritual vertical of the history the Rose of Turaida represents this theme in museum. Those are also neighbours through the centuries – the neighbours, who come as friends with advice and genuine desire to help and neighbours, who desire to conquer lands of other people. Cruelty, violence and war accompany humanity thousads of years. How often do we ask a question – what are we like? We and our neighbours in the history and system of values? In all epochs one of the most important and desirable preconditions among neighbours has been and still is - peace and harmony. Peace, which is based on self-respect. By our presence we all have an impact on the environment, where we are, about which we think and in its turn the environment have an impact on us. Also the events, which took part in the previous centuries in this environment we perceive in direct or indirect way. We all are participants in the space and time as it is testified by the ancient spiritual traditions in the past.
