The first floor of the tower-shaped southern block
A separating arch divides the room up into two lengthy
segments. These have unusually angled cross vaults – on the
side walls they are lightly bent, while at the ends they are
semi-curved. This is a merger of two types of curves that
was typical in Gothic design. The eastern wall of the second
segment has a narrow niche which is thicker on the outside.
A second, somewhat wider and deeper niche with a central
window and a roof is in the southern wall. To the South of the
room is a small cellar accessed via a hatch in the floor.
The second floor of the tower-shaped southern block
The entrance to the second floor room was at one time in the
northern wall and at the top of a wooden staircase. Later
an entrance was installed from the western addition, and the
door aperture in the northern wall was rebuilt to become a
window aperture.
An angled cross vault covered the second floor of the building,
with narrower and broader curves at the sides and ends of the
room. The ceiling was 5.6 m high, with stairs in the eastern
and southern wall. An original part of the brick floor remains
near the eastern wall. The room was heated with a stove and
a warm-air channel installed in the brick floor.
The tower-shaped southern block of the castle was built to the South of the defensive wall during the late 13th century.
Its purpose was to protect the entrance to the castle yard from the direction of the southern forecastle. The foundations and
lower part of the building were made of medium-sized fieldstones, while upper walls were made of red clay bricks measuring
9x14x30 cm. The walls were more than two metres thick, with high and massive counterforce structures at the corners. The
building had a cellar, two residential floors and a third floor of weapons. Most of the building was gone by the 19th century, and
the remaining structure was used as a household cellar. The structure was restored between 1980 and 1982.
