Carl von Ungern-Sternberg. The Turaida castle, 1810. Sepia.
IVM.
The castle ruins are depicted from the traditional view place – southern part of the court yard. According to this drawing,
the building was initially plastered by lime mortar. In the centre of the drawing – the remains of the large semi-round tower and
west block, built in the 15th-16th century, which at the time of drawing were used as estate’s granary. On the right – the main
tower of the castle, built in the 13th century. It was the last shelter of the castle defenders. Initial entrance in the tower was in
the middle part of the building. Later entrance was broaken out in the lower part of the tower.
