Johann Christoph Brotze. Sigulda Lutheran Church of St.Bartholomew, 1792. Ink drawing.

Sigulda congregation probably was established already in 1206, when the priest Alabrant arrived here to baptize local Livs
and „separated the congregation.” It is considered that the church in Sigulda was built already in 1225. Later it was rebuilt
several times. In the drawing J.Ch.Brotze depicted the church from the northern side. The building on the left – might be the
ancient tavern. Fence around the church, more credibly, marks the boundaries of cemetery existing until 1772. It was said that
the tree on the right, in the beginning of the 20th century, had reached the age of „one thousand years” and burnt down during
the World War I. However, the age of this oak-tree is exaggerated at least twice.
