The Cart-house
There were several cart-houses at the Turaida Estate
over the course of the centuries. The nobleman’s carriage
was kept in a cart-house in the yard of the castle until
the early 20th century. The cart-house that was in the
economic centre of the Turaida Estate was used to store
work carts and equipment for riding. The museum
reserve reconstructed the building in 2002.
The Exhibition “The Cart-house
of the Turaida Estate”
The oldest transport vehicles in this exhibition date
back to the late 19th and early 20th century, and they
were manufactured by local artisans. The oldest sleighs
and carts usually had no iron elements, and they were
used to transport products and people. Sleighs were
first produced in the 18th century, and carriages used
exclusively for humans followed in the 19th century.
The exhibition features various types of carts,
carriages, sleighs, sleds, harnesses, bells and other
horse-related equipment.
Until the latter half of the 20th century, each Latvian
farm had several sleighs, sleds and carts used for
various work purposes during the summer and
the winter.
During the late 19th century and until the first half of
the 20th century, Sigulda, Turaida and Krimulda were
popular destinations for holidaymakers. Many farmers
earned money by offering tours of the beautiful
surroundings. The exhibition shows various types of
coaches which drivers used to transport partiers. These
drivers were local guides who could tell the legends
and stories about the Gauja River and the caves
and castles along its banks. Tourists continued to
travel around the area in coaches and sleighs until the
mid-20th century.
