The Krimulda castle ruins, 1794.
Ink drawing.

Building of the Krimulda
castle for Riga Dome Chapter was
started in the 13th century.
For the
first time in written
sources it was
mentioned in 1312. In the second
half of the 16th century the castle
came under the rule of Poland-
Lithuania. Krimulda became a
starostwo (crown land). In 1601,
the castle was conquered by
Swedish troops and destroyed. In
1817, the castle came into
possession of Liven family.
According to initiative of owners,
from 1861-1863 on the foundations
of castle ruins there was built a wall
with two pseudo-Gothic arches as a
peculiar tribute to the fashion of
artificial castle ruins. The drawing
by
Ch.Brotze
depicts
the
expressive remains of the Krimulda
castle in the end of the 18th
century – two fragments of wall
which have preserved on the hill of
the ancient Gauja valley. As to
other buildings and defensive wall,
at that period only foundation has
preserved. Therefore the Krimulda
castle ruins have been depicted
rarely.
